August 1, 2024 Napo Cultural Center News
The recent years have underscored the importance of resilience and community, and at the Napo Cultural Center, we have embraced these values to enhance our facilities while preserving the rich traditions of the Amazonian Kichwa culture. Inspired by the traditional practice of Minga—a collaborative effort for the common good—we have revitalized our lodge to offer an exceptional experience for our guests.

A New Chapter for Napo Cultural Center
Embracing Community and Sustainability
In the wake of global challenges, the Napo Cultural Center embarked on a journey to revitalize our facilities, ensuring they reflect our commitment to community, sustainability, and cultural preservation. Our recent renovations are a testament to the power of collective effort and the unwavering support of our community and partners.
The Transformation
1. The New Pier
The transformation began with our pier, which has been elevated to a three-story structure, offering guests a unique and immersive experience. The first floor serves as a welcoming area for boarding and disembarking, complete with hammocks for relaxation overlooking the serene lagoon. The upper floors provide exceptional vantage points for wildlife observation, allowing guests to witness the diverse flora and fauna that thrive in the surrounding forest.
2. Renovated Cabins
We have completely renovated five of our cabins—Sachawacra I & II, Amarum, Pishña, and Pumagarza—enhancing them with modern amenities while maintaining their connection to nature. The refurbished cabins feature:
- Spacious rooms with modern bathrooms
- Expansive balconies with hammocks and a living area
- Stunning views of the forest, offering close encounters with birds and primates
These upgrades ensure that our guests enjoy first-class accommodations while remaining deeply connected to the natural beauty of the Amazon.
Commitment to Sustainability
At the Napo Cultural Center, environmental sustainability is at the heart of our mission. Our recent renovations incorporate innovative materials and practices that reduce our ecological footprint:
- Recycled Plastic Walkways: We have replaced parts of our walkways with recycled plastic wood, providing a durable and sustainable solution that prevents the felling of approximately 200 trees. These walkways offer a lifespan of 25 years, ensuring long-term sustainability.
- Recycled Thatch Roofs: The new cabin roofs are crafted from recycled plastic sheets, designed to withstand the extreme humidity and temperature of the Amazon for up to 50 years. This innovation preserves the traditional Kichwa architectural style while eliminating the need to harvest around 15,000 leaves.
A Testament to Cultural Preservation and Innovation
The Napo Cultural Center is proud to offer a harmonious blend of cultural preservation and modern innovation. By integrating sustainable practices and respecting our ancestral heritage, we provide our guests with an unforgettable Amazonian experience while contributing to the protection of this vital ecosystem.
